The principal
Dr Bart De Wever, PhD.
Principal
Belgian.
Resident in Monaco.
Working languages English, French, German and Dutch.
The career
The career divides between operating roles inside science companies and independent advisory.
Advanced Tissue Sciences, SkinEthic, Episkin, Phenion, Epithelix are recognized names in the field of reconstructed human tissue and alternatives to animal testing. His role in building them is not public in the same way. Credit accrued to the companies, which is where he stood in the structure.
Much of that work was carried out from within the companies and institutions themselves, where the achievement properly accrued to the organization rather than the individual.
The doctorate
He joined SkinEthic in 1997. Maastricht University awarded the doctorate in 2006. The PhD formalized nearly a decade of commercial research rather than preceding it, and the research inside it contributed directly to regulatory acceptance of those methods across OECD countries.
Reconstructed Models of Human Epidermal, Corneal, and Oral Epithelial Tissue as an Alternative to Animal Testing Methods.
Maastricht University, 2006.
Regulatory standing
Reconstructed human tissue models are now internationally accepted as alternatives to animal testing for defined regulatory applications.
His work contributed to the validation work underpinning this transition, including work associated with methods incorporated into OECD Test Guidelines.
